Inventing

Andini’s first toy was an old box of transistors…

From there, Andini began a fascination with learning how things worked, and what was inside of them. Old printers, computers, cameras, dead birds - no matter what, she loved taking things apart.

Collecting garbage from around the house, Andini would take her hot glue gun and piece together her first ‘inventions’ - which of course never worked, but the idea of taking the resources around her and piecing them together to make something better was engrained into her understanding of the world.

Andini started participating in the local Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair when she was in grade 6, and ended up competing in 10 science fairs by the time she graduated high school. Her projects were focused in the area of harvesting alternative energy.

The Hollow Flashlight

The inspiration for Andini’s flashlight came from her friend in the Philippines, who had failed a grade in school because she had no light or electricity to study with at night.

15 year old Andini decided to base her science fair project around her friends problem, and create a light source that wouldn’t require any batteries.

She ended up inventing the Hollow Flashlight, a flashlight that runs off the heat of the human hand. It uses Peltier tiles, and a special circuit in order to produce light.

Andini ended up winning her age category at the 2013 Google Science Fair, awards at the Canada Wide Science Fair, and multiple awards the International Intel Science and Engineering Fair as part of Team Canada.

Andini has multiple patents for her flashlight technology in both Canada and the United States.

She hopes that they will one day be available on the market.

The eDrink

Another invention of Andini’s that gained worldwide coverage was the eDrink, a coffee mug that harvests the excess heat of your hot drink and converts it into electricity to charge your phone.

She presented it as part of Team Canada at the 2015 International Intel Science and Engineering Fair, and also debuted it on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

Andini has patents for the eDrink in North America.
